Why Does Mould Grow on a Bouncy Castle During Storage?

A bouncy castle may look clean when it is packed away but develop dark spots, unpleasant odours or visible mould when it is unrolled several weeks later.

This usually happens because moisture remains trapped between tightly folded layers of PVC. With little airflow inside the roll, even a small amount of water can create suitable conditions for mould to grow.

The problem is especially common after wet-weather collections, cleaning or events held on damp grass. Understanding where the moisture comes from can help operators prevent damage during storage.

What Causes Mould on a Stored Bouncy Castle?

Mould grows where moisture remains present for an extended period. Dirt and organic residue can make the problem worse.

Common causes include:

  • Packing the inflatable while it is still damp
  • Rainwater trapped in folds and corners
  • Moisture transferred from wet grass
  • Incomplete drying after cleaning
  • Poor ventilation in the storage area
  • Condensation caused by temperature changes
  • Mud, food or grass left on the surface
  • Water trapped around steps and seams

Once the inflatable is tightly rolled, moisture may remain trapped for days or weeks.

A Dry Surface Does Not Mean the Whole Inflatable Is Dry

One of the most common mistakes is checking only the large, visible surfaces.

The bouncing area may feel dry while water remains underneath the inflatable or inside difficult-to-reach sections. Areas that commonly retain moisture include:

  • Under entrance steps
  • Around wall-to-floor connections
  • Inside folded roof panels
  • Between slide lanes and safety walls
  • Beneath removable covers
  • Around anchor points
  • Under climbing steps
  • Inside inflation and deflation tubes

When the inflatable is folded, moisture from these areas can transfer onto otherwise dry PVC. Checking only the upper surface is therefore not enough.

Rainy Collections Require Additional Drying

Commercial operators cannot always wait for dry weather before collecting an inflatable. Rain may begin during an event, or the ground may already be wet when the product is taken down.

Rolling a wet bouncy castle may be necessary for transport, but it should be considered temporary packing rather than long-term storage.

As soon as practical, the inflatable should be unrolled, inflated and dried in a suitable location. Leaving it packed while wet can lead to:

  • Mould spots
  • Musty odours
  • Surface staining
  • Discolouration
  • Moisture transfer between PVC layers
  • Damage to the storage bag

The longer moisture remains trapped, the more difficult the product may be to clean.

Cleaning Can Leave Hidden Moisture

Cleaning is necessary for commercial inflatables, but it introduces additional water to the product.

Water can collect around seams, netting, steps, roof structures and decorative elements. Using more water than necessary can make drying difficult, particularly on large combination units and obstacle courses.

After cleaning, keep the inflatable fully inflated until all areas have dried. Check low points and hidden sections rather than relying on a fixed drying time.

Temperature, humidity, airflow and product design can all affect how long drying takes.

Do Not Forget the Underside

A bouncy castle used on grass can become damp underneath even when it has not rained.

Morning dew, soft ground and moisture in the grass may wet the base. Because the underside is not visible during use, operators may not notice the problem before rolling the inflatable.

A suitable ground sheet can reduce direct contact with wet grass, mud and soil, but it cannot guarantee that the underside will remain completely dry.

Before packing, inspect the base and lower edges. Repositioning or partially rolling the inflatable may be necessary to expose damp areas to the air.

Remove Dirt Before Storage

Moisture is the main cause of mould, but organic residue can encourage further growth and create unpleasant odours.

Before packing the inflatable, remove:

  • Grass and leaves
  • Mud and soil
  • Food crumbs
  • Drink spills
  • Adhesive residue
  • Other visible contamination

Use cleaning products and methods suitable for the inflatable material. Harsh chemicals and abrasive tools may damage the PVC coating, printed artwork or stitching.

If a cleaning product has not been used on the inflatable before, test it on a small, inconspicuous area first.

Choose a Suitable Storage Environment

Even a properly dried inflatable can develop problems if it is stored in a damp location.

A suitable storage area should be:

  • Clean and dry
  • Well ventilated
  • Protected from rain and groundwater
  • Away from leaking pipes or roofs
  • Free from major temperature fluctuations
  • Protected from pests
  • Large enough for safe handling

Avoid storing the inflatable directly on a damp concrete floor. Use a suitable pallet, rack or raised platform that can safely support its weight.

Operators should also inspect the storage area regularly. A warehouse that was dry when the product was packed may later develop condensation, leaks or drainage problems.

How to Dry a Bouncy Castle Before Storage

A consistent drying process can greatly reduce the risk of mould.

Remove Loose Debris

Brush or wipe away grass, leaves and mud before washing. This prevents dirt from spreading across the inflatable.

Clean Only With Suitable Products

Clean the high-contact and visibly dirty areas using methods appropriate for the PVC material. Avoid applying unnecessary amounts of water.

Keep the Inflatable Fully Inflated

Allow air to circulate around the structure while it dries. Ensure the blower intake remains clear and that the inflatable is properly secured.

Check Hidden Areas

Inspect underneath steps, around seams, inside folds and beneath removable parts. Remove any standing water.

Inspect the Base Separately

The underside may remain damp after the upper surfaces have dried. Check it before rolling the inflatable.

Perform a Final Check

Touch and inspect several parts of the inflatable. There should be no visible water, damp areas or musty smell before it is packed.

Fans or dehumidifiers may help in a suitable indoor drying area. Heated equipment should not be placed too close to the PVC.

What Should You Do If Mould Appears?

If mould is found, separate the affected inflatable from clean equipment and inspect the extent of the problem.

Small surface marks may be treated using a cleaning product approved for the inflatable material. Avoid aggressive scrubbing or strong chemicals unless their compatibility with the PVC has been confirmed.

The inflatable should be cleaned, inspected and dried completely before it is returned to use or storage.

Professional assessment may be needed when:

  • Mould covers a large area
  • Staining remains after cleaning
  • The product has a persistent musty odour
  • Moisture appears to be trapped internally
  • Netting or stitching shows deterioration
  • The inflatable was stored wet for a long period
  • There is uncertainty about whether it remains suitable for use

Cleaning visible marks may not reveal damage beneath the surface or inside difficult-to-access areas.

Prevention Is Easier Than Removal

The most effective way to prevent mould is to keep moisture out of the packed inflatable.

Every commercial operator should have a routine for wet collections, cleaning, drying and storage. Staff should understand that a bouncy castle packed after rain must be reopened and dried as soon as possible.

Before placing an inflatable into storage:

  • Make sure all surfaces are clean
  • Check the underside and hidden folds
  • Remove standing water
  • Allow sufficient drying time
  • Confirm that the storage area is dry
  • Keep the packed product raised above damp floors

A careful drying and storage routine can prevent unpleasant odours, difficult cleaning and avoidable damage.
