Rain does not automatically mean that every outdoor bouncy castle booking must be cancelled. A brief shower may pass without causing serious problems, but the inflatable should not remain in use if the surface becomes slippery, the ground softens or water creates a risk around the blower and electrical supply.
A shower cover may reduce the amount of rain entering the inflatable, but it does not make the product suitable for prolonged or heavy rainfall.
For rental operators, the decision should never be based on rain alone. Wind speed, anchoring, ground conditions, electrical safety, local requirements and the manufacturer’s operating instructions must all be considered.
Should You Deliver If Rain Is Forecast?
The decision often begins several hours before the event.
Occasional light showers may still allow a booking to proceed. Persistent rain, thunderstorms, strong winds or already waterlogged ground may make cancellation or rescheduling the safer option.
Do not look only at the percentage chance of rain. Check when the rain is expected to begin, how long it may last and whether strong winds or thunderstorms are also forecast. The condition of the venue is equally important. Poor drainage, soft ground or limited access can make delivery, setup and collection difficult even when the rainfall is relatively light.
Weather conditions can change quickly. Check the forecast before leaving for the venue, inspect the actual conditions when you arrive and continue monitoring them throughout the booking.
The customer may want the event to continue, but the final decision must be based on whether the inflatable can be operated safely.
Check the Site Before Inflation
Before unloading the bouncy castle, inspect the entire operating area.
The ground must be stable enough to support the inflatable and its anchoring system. Soft, muddy or waterlogged ground may not hold stakes securely. Standing water can also create slipping hazards around the entrance, blower and electrical equipment.
If the ground has already become unsuitable, do not inflate the product simply because it has arrived at the venue.
Rain is also frequently accompanied by changing wind conditions.
Always follow the maximum operating wind speed stated by the manufacturer and any applicable local regulations. As a recognised safety reference, UK guidance states that inflatables should not be operated in winds above 24 mph (38 km/h). Some products may have a lower limit, so the product manual must always take priority.
Use a suitable anemometer to measure wind speed at the site. A weather app may help with planning, but it cannot replace an on-site measurement. Conditions should be checked regularly, particularly when rain clouds or gusts are approaching.
All required anchor points must be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Check that the stakes, ballast or other anchoring equipment are suitable for the surface and that every connection is secure.
Do not use fences, vehicles, trees or temporary structures as substitutes for the correct anchoring system. If rain continues and the ground begins to soften, inspect the anchors again.
The blower, plugs, cables and electrical connections must also be protected from water and positioned in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable electrical safety requirements. Cables should be kept away from entrances, walkways and areas where water may collect.
If the electrical supply cannot be kept safe and dry, the inflatable should not be operated.
What Should You Do When Rain Starts?
Light rain can change the condition of a bouncy castle more quickly than expected. Operators should not wait until the inflatable is completely soaked before taking action.
Stop operation if:
- The bouncing or sliding surface becomes slippery
- Water begins to collect inside the inflatable
- Users have difficulty standing or moving safely
- Visibility becomes poor
- Wind speeds approach the permitted limit
- The ground or anchoring begins to deteriorate
- Water threatens the blower or electrical connections
- Thunder or lightning is present or approaching
Ask all users to leave calmly and prevent anyone from re-entering until the inflatable has been inspected.
A thin layer of water can make entrance steps, climbing sections, bouncing surfaces and slide platforms dangerously slippery. Children should not be allowed to continue playing simply because the rainfall appears light.
PVC-coated fabric is generally water-resistant, but this does not mean the complete inflatable setup is safe to use in wet weather. Surface grip, wind, anchoring, visibility and electrical safety are more important than whether the PVC itself can tolerate contact with water.
A shower cover may reduce the amount of rain entering some bouncy castles, but it should not be treated as a waterproof roof. Wind-driven rain may still enter through the front, sides or safety netting.
Can the Bouncy Castle Reopen After the Rain?
The rain stopping does not automatically mean that the inflatable is ready to reopen.
First, confirm that the wind remains within the permitted limit. Recheck all anchor points, inspect the ground for mud or standing water and make sure the blower and electrical equipment have not been affected.
Remove any accumulated water and dry the areas used for walking, bouncing, climbing and sliding. The inflatable should also be checked for movement, damage or deformation.
Users should only be allowed to return when the complete setup has been inspected and all surfaces are safe to use.
If there is still uncertainty about the weather, ground, anchoring or electrical equipment, keep the inflatable closed. Losing part of a booking is preferable to reopening too early and creating an avoidable risk.
Handling a Wet Inflatable After Collection
The operational risk does not end when the event finishes. A wet inflatable is heavier, more slippery and more difficult to roll and transport.
Remove as much surface water as possible before deflation. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and try to prevent water from entering blower tubes or becoming trapped inside folded sections.
Staff should allow for the additional weight and use appropriate handling equipment when necessary. Mud on the underside and water between layers can make the packed inflatable considerably harder to move.
A wet inflatable should not remain tightly rolled in storage for an extended period. Trapped moisture can lead to staining, unpleasant odours and microbial growth.
Once the product returns to the storage facility, reinflate it or unfold it completely in a suitable drying area. Remove mud and dirt, then allow the surfaces, seams, safety netting, roof cover, entrance, slide lanes, blower tubes and lower sections to dry thoroughly.
Inspect the inflatable again before packing it for storage. It should be completely dry before being rolled and stored for any length of time.
Create a Clear Wet-Weather Policy
A written wet-weather policy helps both the rental company and the customer understand what will happen if conditions change.
The policy should explain when the weather will be reviewed, who makes the final safety decision and what happens if the booking is cancelled or interrupted. It should also state whether rescheduling or credit is available and why a customer cannot override a safety decision.
Provide these terms before the booking date rather than introducing them only after poor weather appears in the forecast.
Operators should also keep records of weather checks, wind readings, site inspections and any decision to stop or restart operation. These records demonstrate that conditions were actively monitored.

A brief shower does not always require an immediate cancellation, but no bouncy castle should continue operating when rain affects surface grip, anchoring, visibility, ground stability or electrical safety.
Rental operators should assess the complete site, follow the product manual, measure wind speed and continue monitoring conditions throughout the booking. Local regulations and manufacturer-specific limits must always take priority over general guidance.
